David Shlomo Dortort and wife
Miryam Seeman. Picture taken in Berlin, 1896. David Shlomo and
Miryam lived in Drohobycz, Galicia, and were visiting Berlin for a
relative's (son's?) wedding.
Marcus Yehoshua Mordechai Dortort, one of the sons of David Shlomo, in
Austrian Army, WWI. Being kosher, he consumed only bread and black
coffee during these years of army service.
Drogobycz, Galicia, before the Holocaust.
Dortorts, 1919, Budapest. From L to R: Seated: Leib (Louis),
Lifsche (Regina), Yehoshua Mordechai (Marcus); standing: Chaim
Fishel(Ferenc), Sara Taube (Szeren). Leib settled in Paris in 1923,
and he and his family were miraculously hidden out during the war.
All the others in this photo were lost to the Germans.
This is the last photograph ever taken of Yehoshua Mordechai Dortort and his wife, Lifsche. Drohobycz, 1939, before they were put in Drohobycz ghetto by the Nazis and killed.
Seated on the right is Osias Yehoshua Mordechai Dortort Katz (b. 1863,
Galicia, d. Israel). He is, to my best estimation, 2nd cousins to
Marcus Yehoshua Mordechai Dortort, above. Seated on the left is his
wife, Pesi Horowitz (d. 1943). They had 4 sons: Ben (1891-1972),
Harry (1894-1986), Charles (1901-?), and Daniel (1906-?).
(Left) Lifsche Dortort and her daughter, Sara Taube Dortort, Lubienia,
Poland, mid-1930s.
(Right) Sara Taube and two sons, Tibus and Irwin. Poland, early or
mid-1930s. All killed in Holocaust.
Edward (Ephraim) Kahane Dortort, was
born on 20 Sep 1870 in Rozdal Zydozow, Austria, and died on 18 Sep
1957 in Philadelphia, Penn. The youngest of 15 children, he served in
the Austrian army, and apparently worked for the Austrian
newspapers. He wed Etta Cirel Schrieber and moved to Switzerland,
where he served as a (the?) Swiss delegate to the 1st Zionist Congress
in Basel, under the direction of Theodore Hertzl.
