Comments from Japanese students
This letter was received from Sadao Kawa on January 6, 2001, and is reproduced in its entirety below, with his permission.
Dear Dr. Eagleman,
I am a teacher at a Japanese senior high school. I teach English. When I
found your site, I had long wanted to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Sugihara and
their great deed during the Second World War to my students in my English
class.
I made "Visas for Life" into a textbook and read it with my third-year
students.
They didn't have enough knowledge about the situation of Europe those days
under which Jews lived and I took much time to explain the background of
what Mr. and Mrs. Sugihara did for the Jewish people who came to the
consulate in Kaunas.
I am now deeply satisfied that my students understood the significance of
their humanistic deed for the Jewish people.
This letter is to inform you of my gratitude to your site that provided
with superb documents that are most suitable for my students to read.
Here are some of the comments students made after reading "Visas for
Life". English is their foreign language and it is difficult for them to
convey their thought and feelings fully in English, but I believe that they
reveal how the students felt learning the heroic deed of Mr. and Mrs.
Sugihara.
-
Mr. Sugihara is the holiest person whom we should respect. I am
moved by what he did. Perhaps, we, nowadays, Japanese people,
need a person like him. I like him very much. And I respect
him because he saved many people in need. I hope that I am to
be a person like him. And I want to serve many people in
distress. I want to save refugees and hungry people.
-
Mr. Sugihara is a person who should be known by all Japanese.
And all Japanese should be proud of him. Because he was willing
to lose his rank. Can everyone act like him? Probably I
can't. I respect not only Mr. Sugihara but also his wife. She
helped her husband. And she was also willing to lose her life.
-
Mr. Sugihara is a man who has much courage because he issued
visas to Jewish refugees in spite of their risk of his career,
his family and the lives of his family.
-
I just look up to him. His deed is very respectable. Moreover,
he was a humble man and did not exaggerate himself. He is the
very man that has humanity. I hope that many more people will
have true courage. Even if it is not big, the important thing
is to do something.
-
I hope that I will become an adult like Mr. Sugihara. And I
would like to make a virtuous decision for the people in need.
-
I think him a great man and rare man. His face is printed in
one of Israel's memorial stamps. I don't know anyone who is
like him.
I would like to say thank you again for providing us with the occasion to
share the virtuous deed of Mr. and Mrs. Sugihara.
I hope for the prosperity of Sugihara Project with more people visiting
this site.
Sincerely yours,
Sadao Kawa
